From Then to Now

2019 marks the 10th year in business for Brown Pelican WiFi! In 2009, Glenn Hall, our Founder and Fearless Leader (maybe we should put that title on his business cards too?), started the company as G.E. Hall, LLC, a consultancy, advising clients on their event IT and WiFi needs. Since then, many things have changed: 

•  The company name changed to Brown Pelican Group in 2013, after Marybeth Hall (Glenn’s wife) joined the company, then finally to Brown Pelican WiFi in 2015.

•  We broadened our services to include not just advising on networks, but also building a team of experts and an inventory of enterprise grade, state-of-the-art equipment to support events from 10 to 10,000 users.

•  Brown Pelican has become the exclusive WiFi provider at some of the most iconic locations in the Bay Area, installing permanent networks to support hundreds of events each year. 

•  With our team of experts, we are proud to consider ourselves an industry thought leader, and at the top of our game in the event WiFi community, working with some of the top brands in the world. Check some of our projects here.


The Only Thing Constant is Change 

Over the last 10 years, we’ve seen so much change in the event WiFi industry. Just think, 10 years ago, the smartphone was entering the marketplace and people were just starting to make the switch over to that technology. While WiFi was a thing, it wasn’t expected everywhere you go. Today, WiFi is not only expected, but it’s necessary and critical to much of our daily lives.

Since our early days of focusing on just advising clients how to build the best network for their event, we’re now able to create WiFi solutions that include: satellite WiFi, permanent WiFi networks installed at some of the most well known spaces in the Bay Area, and we’re on the leading edge of microsegmented networking – providing individual, secure WiFi bubbles for thousands of people at an event. Luckily, we all love dynamic environments and constant change – because the one thing constant in the event WiFi business is change! 


The State Of The Industry: By Glenn Hall

I’ve seen a lot of change in the event WiFi industry over the years, that’s for sure! When we first started, WiFi at an event was more of an afterthought – clients had it fairly low on their priority list, so we would get called really late in the game. That meant we’d have to scramble to find solutions, especially for bandwidth, since there weren’t many players to choose from. 

Ubiquitous use of WiFi at events didn’t really take off until around 2010, when we started to see that attendees, press, VIPs and production teams were bringing their smartphones to events. Back then, there was a big focus on providing great attendee WiFi. That trend really took off once more and more devices were WiFi enabled. We used to estimate that 50% of people at events would connect to the network with a single device. Today we account for 100% of attendees connecting with multiple devices.

Now, with IoT accounting for much of the experiences at live events, WiFi has become a must have, and we’ve adapted to provide the latest enterprise grade equipment and the best teams in the industry to support our clients’ event technology needs.

Brown Pelican WiFi has grown since it was just Glenn. There are currently 8 members of the Brown Pelican core team, supported by dozens of industry professionals across the country. This group of talented experts have been instrumental in leading the business to where it is now, and towards the exciting new areas we are moving into.
